The building and grounds of Cottonwood School, located northeast of Hemingford near the Dawes/Box Butte County line on U.S. Highway 385, were sold at auction Tuesday to a local un-named buyer for $16,000.

In January, the Hemingford School Board voted to no longer hold classes at Cottonwood after the 2007-08 school year because of declining student numbers and the expense of maintaining the separate learning center.

The school housed three students and the cost to educate each student had risen to $35,000 a year, nearly three times the amount it costs to educate a student in Hemingford.

The contents of the building as well as playground equipment had been sold in early June.

District 10 Superintendent Casper Ningen commented that, " It was important to the district to find a new owner, so that the building, which has been well-cared for by Cottonwood Parents and Board-members for many years, would not stand vacant and fall into disrepair."
