William "Bill" Hastings died at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska at 84 years of age on August 22, 2010.
He was born April 2, 1926 at Rushville, Nebraska to Glenn and Edna Hastings. Bill was raised by his parents on a ranch south of Hay Springs along with his brothers Lloyd and Jack. He spent all but the last two years of his life in Hay Springs. Even though he lived at Prairie Pines in Chadron for the last two years, he always considered Hay Springs his home.
On June 25, 1949, Bill married Donna Jean Dykes in Rapid City, South Dakota. They made their home in Hay Springs. After Donna's passing in 1965, he married Ellen Brotherson on March 10, 1967.
Bill spent most of his working years driving trucks – the bigger the truck the better. He loved to get into an 18-wheeler and head down the road. He liked to take his family for Sunday afternoon drives and usually had an old car to tinker with. During the earlier years, he enjoyed golfing and collected numerous trophies. Spending time with his family and friends gave him great pleasure.
Survivors include his daughter Linda Schneider (Tom) of Alliance, grandchildren Doug Kozal (Becky), Jeff Schneider (Kerri), Jenni Schneider and her friend Justin all of Alliance and Kayla Kelley (JR) of Valentine. Great grandchildren include Brittany, Cameron, Megan, Carlie, Hannah, Hallie, Sydney, Harper, Josie and Preston and a great-great grandson Tegan. He is also survived by a step-daughter Betty Kudrna (Smiley) of Valentine.
Graveside services will be held September 3, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hay Springs Cemetery with Pastor Rod Heilbrun officiating.
