Edna E. Christensen, 93, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Highland Park Care Center

She was born April 1, 1918 in Hardy, Nebraska to Morris and Petra (West) Mortensen.

Following high school she obtained her teaching certificate and began teaching in the Hardy area. At the age of 20 she moved to Box Butte County and began teaching in rural schools near Hemingford, which she continued to do for 20 years.

On July 8, 1942 she married Harlan E. Christensen in Inglewood, CA.

Edna was a charter member of St. John's United Lutheran Church. She was an active member of the church and enjoyed being a member of Women of ELCA and helping with various church functions. She was also a member of the Modern Mothers Extension Club for many years, St. John's Altar Guild, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son, Ronald (Leslie) Christensen of Castle Rock, CO, her daughter, Shirley (Wayne) McCart of Hemingford, her grandchildren, Judson Christensen of Escondido, CA, Scott (Jennifer) Christensen of Mancos, CO, Jon (Cynthia) Christensen of Okinawa, Japan, Tracy (Bill) Bennett of Culbertson, NE and Lisa (Chad) Thomas of Alliance, her great-grandchildren, Daniel Christensen, Andrew Christensen, Matthew Christensen, Luke Christensen, George Christensen, Rosie Marie Christensen, Kyler Thomas, Carson Thomas and Emily Bennett. She is also survived by her sisters, Lydia Foreman of Hillsboro, OR, Helen Wagner of Mt. Vernon, WA and Darlene Knipping of Sun Lakes, AZ and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, her sisters, Ruth Lawrence and Gladys Mortensen, and her brother, Morris Mortensen.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 2:00 pm at St. John's United Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Meysing officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.

Memorials may be given to St. John's Church or Prairie Haven Hospice.
