Lydia Vergith, 97, of Alliance, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Box Butte General Hospital.

Lydia was born December 9, 1910 in Seward County on a farm at Milford, Nebraska to Anton and Rose (Horak) Strouf. She attended rural Camden School and in 1932 moved with her parents to Crete, Nebraska.

She worked for Doane College, Fairmont Creamery and Crete Mills where she met her husband. She was married to Sidney Vergith October 31, 1936 in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union, two children were born, James and Beverly.

In October of 1941 she and her husband moved to Alliance. She was employed in the lunch room at the Alliance Sale Barn and the Alliance Cleaners until her retirement.

She always loved growing flowers and taking care of her yard. She was very active with volunteer work and loved to dance. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the U.T.U., the Burlington Northern Retired Veterans Association, R.S.V.P., and a 50 year member of the W.F.L.A. In October of 2007 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Health Care Center.

Lydia is survived by her children, James (Arlene) Vergith of Pueblo West, Colorado and Beverly (Charles) Jensen of Alliance; grandchildren, Ed (Amy) Jensen, Jeff (Gaylene) Jensen, and Steve Jensen, all of Alliance, Sherri Jensen of Ravenna, Cindy Comer and Val (Sam) Cordova, all of Northglenn, Colorado, and Jodi (Steve) Flynn of Solon, Iowa. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Heather, Chris, Jenny, Liz, Emily, Nathaniel, Josh, Janelle, Brandon, Kerriann, Stephanie, Blake, Jason, Shauna, Amber (Shane), Eric, Sarah, Preston, Ryan, Garrett, Justin, Kendall, and Morgan; great great grandchildren, Reece, Keegan, Ethan, Evan, and Matt; brother-in-law, Ronald (Barbara) Vergith of DeWitt, Nebraska; and sisters-in-law, Frances Vergith of Lincoln and Judy (Jim) Treichel of Moorhead, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sidney, and her daughter-in-law, Margaret Vergith.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Norma Jensen will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Online condolences may be left at www.batesgould.com
