September Alliance Public Library Report

Fall is looking to be a busy time here at your library! The library is beginning some new and exciting things, so be sure to “check out” what is going on! With the last long Labor Day weekend coming to end our summer, please remember that the library will resume its Winter hours on Tuesday, September 7. Those hours are:

Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, 1:00-4:00

The library staff would like to welcome our newest member, Jonathan Weishaar, who has been hired as the new Library Page. Jonathan is a student at Alliance High School and is also active with the tennis team. We are all happy to have him here, and we are certain our patrons will be as well. The staff would also like to welcome our newest Board of Directors member, Robyn Iossi. Robyn is a Student Services Coordinator for the Alliance branch of Western Nebraska Community College. Robyn will serve as the replacement for out-going Board member Virgil Hatch, who graciously served on our Board for the past four years. The entire Board of Directors and staff offer their sincerest appreciation to Virgil, and extend a big welcome to Robyn!

The Library is excited to offer the first time opportunity of joining our library-hosted Book Club! All meetings are open to anyone interested and will be hosted here in the library. Two separate sessions discussing the same title will be held during the last full week of each month on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m., and again on Thursday evenings at 6:00. If you would like to participate, please sign up at the circulation desk. The book selected for September is "Peace Like a River" by Leif Enger. There are multiple copies of this book available for checkout at the library. Each borrower pays an Interlibrary Loan fee of $2.75. Please come out and join what will prove to be lively and interesting conversations! For questions, please contact Ronda Larson at the library at 763-1387. The September sessions will be held at 1:00 on Tuesday, September 21, and again at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23 in the north nook of the library.

Friday, September 10, will be the first presentation of the year for the Friends of the Library Brown Bag programs. The speaker will be Wally Seiler, who will review "Life is What You Make It", by Peter Buffett. Wally does an excellent job of reviewing books, so please do not miss this program held at noon in the meeting rooms of the library. The Friends will be sharing coffee and cookies.

Fall in Alliance means excitement over Nebraska Football, and the library is proudly displaying the Husker collection of Kevin Horn. Kevin is not only and avid Husker fan, he is also a wonderful supporter of the library. The staff is very grateful to Kevin's always generous attitude in sharing with us here. Come in and see all of the awesome things Kevin has collected over his years of following Nebraska Football.

Storytime will resume for all children ages 3-6 years on Tuesday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. The theme will be "Back to School". We will continue our Storytime schedule of every Tuesday evening at 6:30 and every Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. Other themes for September will be "Apples", "Fall", and "On the Farm". Please bring your child out to what is always a fun time with reading, sharing, crafts, and snacks.

Please take time at the end of this summer season to come up to the library and enjoy the rose garden for your reading or Book Club enjoyment. Earlynn Lawrence works hard at keeping the roses beautiful, and this is a great time of year to be outside with a book in the cooler temperatures. Also, take a walk around the library and enjoy all the beautiful plants and landscaping here. We are so thankful to all Heather Hauptman does to keep the library beautiful. Her talents are simply amazing, so please take time to enjoy the library grounds.

The staff here has been busy accumulating a book order and is happy to report that we have enlisted the help of former librarian Jo Hall to help with our selection. Jo knows the Alliance patron's reading preferences better than anyone, and we are happy to have her back in an active role here at the library! Of course, if you would like to suggest a book for purchase, please fill out your request at the circulation desk!

From all of us here at your library ... thank you and we are all looking forward to seeing you this Fall!
