East Point District 25 Celebrates!

East Point District 25 in Box Butte County will celebrate over 100 years of service to the County on Friday, May 16th with an Open House at the school. The celebration will begin at 5:30 pm and run until 7:30 pm. There will be a potluck dinner with meat, drinks, and dinnerware being furnished.

At the end of this school year, East Point District 25 will close its doors due to legislation passed by the State of Nebraska that allowed affiliated school districts to close smaller Class I schools. This is a passing of Nebraska history where the state granted land to counties for these smaller schools. Early on they served the purpose of families homesteading. Many more families were in each small school district and as time passed, farms and machinery grew and fewer people were needed to produce the food and products. East Point has been an aberration with the enrollment staying high due to the Rainbow Acres area, East Point area, and option enrollment

East Point was founded in 1887 and has had hundreds of students pass through its' doors. Many of these students have gone on to high school and beenin the top 10 % of their class or even valedictorian or salutatorian of their respective high school graduating class. The number of attendees that have gone on to college is also noteworthy.

Two families are known to have had four generations of students attend East Point, the Seidler and Payne families. There have been several families with two generations attending the school.

Again, anyone that is interested in sharing in this celebration is welcome to attend. At 7:15 p.m. there will be short program with festivities to end at about 7:30 pm.
